Glenmore Kelowna to See Accelerated Development
Kelowna remains a top contender for the fastest-growing city in Canada. With the YLW International Airport, UBCO, and the summer tourism industry, it’s not surprising that so many Canadian visitors want to become residents. As the city tries to keep up with its growing population, space for expansion in the usual territories is limited. However, there are several areas within the city that are lacking in development. North Glenmore Kelowna happens to be one of those areas. And, according to the city council, development in this area might need to happen sooner rather than later.
Is It Time To Expand North Glenmore Kelowna?
Originally, the 2040 Official Community Plan suggested that a sector study for the area including McKinley, UBCO, and the airport could wait. But now, a few major property owners have stepped up, offering to fund a study of their own. Their motive is to work with the city to get ahead of growth before it becomes a problem.
Councillor Mohini Singh put forward a motion to move the North Glenmore study from a long-term project to an active planning initiative. The reason behind accelerating the project is that the area is already seeing huge growth. More people on the road means more congestion, more frustration, and more environmental impact. Plus, not everyone moving to Kelowna wants to live in a condo or a townhome. In fact, there are a lot of folks who still want a single-family house with a backyard.
Singh made a strong case for moving forward noting that the study will provide valuable data to see how expansion is possible in North Glenmore. Since property owners have offered to fund the study, this research won’t cost taxpayers or take up staff time. However, the city will still set the parameters and oversee the study.
At its core, the study would focus on things like utilities, road connections, environmental concerns, and how to avoid conflicts with protected agricultural land and steep terrain. It would also consider how growth in North Glenmore affects Lake Country and how development should respect the airport’s flight paths. Experts are hopeful that the study being conducted will be able to be completed within a year or so since it is being kept at a high level.
